Open Education and Indigenous Knowledge

Shape Nov 20, 2024

Open education (OE) discussions often revolve around copyright and intellectual property concepts rooted in European traditions, which can conflict with Indigenous knowledge systems. Our panelists will emphasize Indigenous ways of knowing, cultural practices, lived experiences, and worldviews in the context of Open.

Joining us from Hawaii is Annemarie Aweau Paikai, who in addition to being Hawaiian Collection Librarian at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo is a founding member of Nā Hawaiʻi ʻImi Loa, the professional organization whose mission is to advance Hawaiian knowledge systems, services, and research within library information systems (LIS). She is dedicated to centering and stewarding ʻike kuʻuna Hawaiʻi (ancestral knowledge), including ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi, within the library profession in Hawaiʻi as well as within her own ʻohana (family).

Located in Arizona, Linda Chappel teaches Visual Arts at Tohono O’odham Community College. She has 20+ years in Higher education as an instructor and as a Department Chair. She has been at Tohono O’odham Community College for five years as Department Chair in the Fine Arts and is currently an adjunct teaching Art History.  In her studio practice she views art as a way to understand the relationship between humans and the earth in contemporary society; focusing on the intrinsic and complex connections to the wider community of animals, plants and land are the center of her artwork. She also explores the persistence and interplay of visual symbols from various cultures and across time.
