Join CCCOER’s Open Exchange, an informal, discussion-focused webinar series designed for peer-to-peer dialogue. Each session revolves around a single question or topic shared in advance, giving participants time to reflect and come prepared to engage. To support candid conversation, sessions are not recorded; instead, a brief summary or key takeaways may be shared afterward without attribution to individual participants.

This Open Exchange asks:
What happens when openly licensed educational materials are adapted in ways that raise concerns about transparency, inclusion, academic freedom, or harm?
The conversation was prompted by recent changes to an OpenStax sociology textbook for use in Florida, described in the Inside Higher Ed article “Florida Introduces ‘Sanitized’ OpenStax Sociology Textbook”. The example raises broader questions for the Open Education community about adaptation, responsibility, authorship, and trust in OER.
Key stakeholders Representatives from FLVC, OpenStax, and other stakeholders will join us to bring different perspectives, but the direction of the session will come from you: your questions, your experiences, and your concerns.
- We invite OER practitioners, librarians, faculty, authors, and others interested in thinking through these questions together.
- Our goal is not to arrive at one answer, but to create space to think about what openness asks of us when the freedoms we value can also be used in ways we may not have anticipated.
